MODEL RELEASED. Breast mammograms. Doctor uses a magnifying glass to examine a series of breast X- rays (mammograms) on a lightbox. Fine tissue details of each breast can be seen; the breast highlighted in the magnifying glass has a cancerous tumour (distinct white area). Mammo- graphy is a means of screening women for tumours of the breast. Tumours may be benign lumps, cysts, or malignant cancer. Once a tumour has been located on a mammogram, other techniques are employed to identify it. Fluid-filled cysts can be identified by ultrasound. Biopsy (sampling) of the tumour will confirm cancer. Mammography enables breast conditions to be detected early on.
